Combatting Sarcopenia and Osteopenia: Essential Tips for Healthy Aging

Hey there Auburn / Opelika fitness enthusiasts!

I don’t want to fearmonger or be unnecessarily hyperbolic, but in the same breath, I don’t think I am. If you’re over the age of 40, there are two things that are coming for your quality of life. You’ve probably heard these words before, but they’re usually followed by a fleeting thought of “That’s an old person’s problem!” or “I won’t have to worry about that for decades!”

What is this “Boogeyman”?

Sarcopenia & Osteopenia.

I know it’s hard to see in your 30s and 40s, but if you look at your parents in their 60s, 70s, or 80s, you’ll see a wide range in how people age. You’ll see the ones that can still do the things they want to do: walk, hike, play on the floor with grandkids. And then you’ll see the ones that can’t. If you pay attention now, you can probably already tell who’s going to fall into which category.

Why Resistance Training is Essential

At Infinity, we believe that your happiest and healthiest life is unlocked through movement that you enjoy. All movement is amazing, but we do believe that a base of resistance training is a must for a multitude of reasons.

Fighting Sarcopenia and Osteopenia

Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass and strength that occurs with aging. Osteopenia is the loss of bone density, a precursor to osteoporosis. Both conditions significantly impact your quality of life, but resistance training is a sure-fire way to combat these issues.

Benefits of Resistance Training

  1. Preserves Muscle Mass: Resistance training helps maintain and build muscle mass, crucial for overall strength and mobility.
  2. Increases Bone Density: Weight-bearing exercises stimulate bone growth, helping to prevent osteopenia and osteoporosis.
  3. Improves Balance and Coordination: Stronger muscles contribute to better balance and reduced fall risk.
  4. Boosts Metabolism: More muscle mass means a higher resting metabolic rate, aiding in weight management.

Start Now for a Healthier Future

Don’t wait until your body starts breaking down on you. The sooner you start working against these detrimental diseases, the happier and healthier your life becomes. Begin incorporating resistance training into your routine now to ensure you can continue enjoying all the activities you love well into your later years.

Keep moving… Stay moving… Stay healthy!

In good health,
