Timeless Health Advice: What We Wish We Knew at 18

Hey there Auburn / Opelika fitness enthusiasts!

Think back to when you were 18… If you could give your younger self one piece of advice about health and fitness, what would it be? We asked our clients this question, and we heard three repeated responses:

1. The Importance of Good Quality Nutrition

Quality nutrition affects not only your body composition and physique but also your energy, recovery, and injury prevention. As a parent, your eating habits directly influence your children. In a country where the rate of obesity in kids continues to grow, this becomes even more critical.

  • Body Composition: Proper nutrition helps maintain a healthy weight and muscle mass.
  • Energy Levels: Nutrient-rich foods provide sustained energy throughout the day.
  • Recovery and Injury Prevention: Adequate nutrition supports muscle recovery and reduces the risk of injuries.

2. Creating a Consistent Sleep Habit

When you’re 18, who cares about getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep? But as you age, sleep becomes increasingly important and affects various metrics, including stress levels, energy levels, recovery, and more. Aim to fall asleep at the same time every night to establish a consistent sleep routine.

  • Stress Levels: Quality sleep helps manage stress and anxiety.
  • Energy and Recovery: Sleep is essential for physical recovery and maintaining high energy levels.
  • Overall Health: Consistent sleep improves cognitive function and overall well-being.

3. Stay Moving, Even if It’s Not in the Gym

At Infinity, we say “motion is lotion” when it comes to your body. Regular movement is crucial for heart health, joint health, and mental well-being. Remember, this doesn’t have to be in the gym! It can be walks around the neighborhood or playing with your dog or kids in the backyard.

  • Heart Health: Regular physical activity improves cardiovascular health.
  • Joint Health: Movement keeps your joints flexible and reduces stiffness.
  • Mental State: Physical activity boosts mental health and reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Start Small

If you’re not currently doing any of these things, don’t try to tackle all three tomorrow. Pick one and start implementing it into your daily routine. Regardless of which one you pick, any of the above will help boost your energy and mental health, positively impacting every other aspect of your life!

Keep moving… Stay moving… Stay healthy!
